To nurture well-rounded people, we need to move away from an over-emphasis on academic results and help our students to cultivate their confidence and creativity, discover their own interests and strengths, and truly care about physical and mental wellbeing.
As a place to live, FCG has a unique and supportive boarding environment. Most of our boarding team are expat teachers, and the others are bilingual teachers. We provide an immersive bilingual and multicultural education by extending this environment to boarding. Rather than learning English to pass examinations, FCG emphasizes English language acquisition, which guides students to proficiency in thinking and communicating in English. Covered by the bilingual and multicultural environment in boarding, opportunities are abundant for our students to socialize with peers and adults from all over the world and learn how to associate with people from different backgrounds. The beauty of different languages enriches the diversity in communications. At the same time, cross-cultural awareness builds a global mindset.

As a place to learn, FCG aims to develop students who are creative and curious. In Early Years and Primary School, outdoor learning is the most distinguished teaching approach of FCG. Integrating its unique cultural heritage, stunning natural environment and futuristic design, the 34-acre FCG campus facilitates extraordinary outdoor learning and teaching experiences. The ingenious design of the buildings presents many integrations of the scientific and aesthetic: our eco-gardens demonstrate knowledge of farming, the laws of nature and the changing seasons; even the little maze in Early Years raises courage and the spirit of adventure in the young minds. Without the constraints of textbooks and classrooms, our students are joyful and develop strong intrinsic motivation for learning. For Middle School students, we place an emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. “Interdisciplinary: a knowledge view and curriculum approach that consciously applies methodology and language from more than one discipline to examine a central theme, topic, issue, problem, or work” (Heidi Hayes Jacobs, 1989). Everything on this planet is not isolated, so when our students acquire knowledge, they should understand what it is and how it connects to other areas. Thereby, all the learners have the chance to connect one thing to another, to find their passion in different subjects and topics and identify their personal strengths. For our Senior School students, teaching and learning happens in the zone of proximal development, the area between what a student can do without assistance and what a student can do with guidance from teachers or peers, so they actively learn with clear aims which leads them to become quick learners with a can-do attitude. Furthermore, FCG Senior School provides different programs for students to carry forward their interests and strengths and fully supports everyone to overcome challenges and achieve excellence.
As a place to grow, FCG students are encouraged to develop a growth mindset in all they do, understanding that they can accomplish great things through perseverance and a willingness to learn from their mistakes. Since recognition is one of the important extrinsic motivations for improvement and growth, which can be gradually internalized into more self-determined, intrinsic motivation, we celebrate student efforts and achievements in a variety of ways throughout the community. For everyday schooling, all teachers have a booklet in the classroom where they can provide feedback for students using stickers that focus on Industria and Growth Mindset. FCG also has regular learning exhibitions to display student progress and outcomes. Alongside academic success and effort, good character is frequently awarded here. Kindness, helpfulness, orderliness and trustworthiness: whenever these FCG character qualities are spotted, students are awarded house points or college awards. Sports and Arts competitions are thriving in FCG as well. Our lunchtime house competitions and games sessions on Friday afternoon offer students the chance to win awards as individuals and for their houses. While giving our students plenty of recognition, we also take mistakes seriously. Making mistakes is a guarantee in life. Nobody can avoid them entirely, no matter what we do. What matters is our response afterwards. One grows by making mistakes and correcting them. In FCG, we set up a six-step procedure to help students acknowledge and analyse the mistake, self-reflect, take what they have learned from the mistake and adjust accordingly. Mistakes are considered as learning experiences and part of the process of growth at FCG.
