Progressing toward CEFR-C1: A Roadmap for Secondary School English Academic Development
As the new academic year begins, FCG Senior School is embracing change and driving innovation in English language education. With a strong focus on precision teaching, interdisciplinary integration, and extracurricular enrichment, the department has thoughtfully designed and implemented a series of effective initiatives. These efforts aim to provide every student with a higher-quality, more efficient English learning experience - empowering them to advance steadily and achieve new breakthroughs in their language journey.
In the following sections, we will take a closer look at these initiatives in detail.
1. Precision Tiering and Comprehensive Personalised Instruction
To maximise learning outcomes and fully respect individual student differences, our school continuously refines its baseline tiering mechanism. At the beginning of the new academic year, grounded in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the more precise EduSynch system is employed to accurately assess students' English abilities across four dimensions—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—and place them into differentiated instruction classes accordingly. Additionally, students who enter at the CEFR A1 level receive extra support through four weekly sessions of "Additional English" courses. Beyond this, the school relies on five annual full-length mock examinations and four writing sample collections to conduct multidimensional dynamic monitoring of each student’s progress.
2. Dual-Track Curriculum: Integrating IGCSE and IELTS Preparation
In curriculum design, the school strictly adheres to the principle of tiered instruction by constructing a dual-track system that integrates both IGCSE and IELTS preparation. At the IGCSE level, the EAL curriculum focuses on building vocabulary and grammar fundamentals, fostering clear and fluent expression in English. The ESL curriculum, through systematic training in grammar, reading, and writing, comprehensively enhances students' language comprehension and application skills. The IELTS curriculum is divided into two stages: preparatory and advanced. The preparatory stage emphasises strengthening language foundations and addressing knowledge gaps, while familiarising students with question types and test patterns. The advanced stage concentrates on deepening and refining test-taking strategies, using full-length mock exams to strengthen time management and acclimatization to exam conditions.
3.Supplementary Support: Addressing Needs and Cultivating Excellence
In addition to the regular curriculum, the school offers specialised English CCAs (Co-Curricular Activities) from Tuesday to Thursday afternoon, providing tiered tutoring for students who need to consolidate foundational skills or pursue advanced enrichment.
Lastly, we look forward to supporting every student in achieving CEFR-C1 level English mastery by the end of the academic year through our systematic curriculum design and personalized support—paving the way for their academic advancement and laying a solid foundation for them to become confident global communicators.
