EY4 students explored how products change from raw materials to finished goods and developed an understanding of how products are priced. Building on this learning, the children prepared and made all the products themselves, designed and set up stalls, and successfully hosted a flea market. They then used the funds raised to plan and hold a New Year celebration, inviting teachers and children from across the school. During the party, the students confidently shared their inquiry journey and expressed their appreciation to peers, parents, and teachers for supporting the flea market.

Starting from the authentic question, “How can we open a bakery?”, the children continuously generated new questions and explored the preparations required before products can be sold, including ingredient labels, production dates, pricing, and the different roles involved in running a bakery. By responding to these real-life questions, the students developed a concrete understanding of how social systems operate.

Throughout the inquiry, learning was strongly driven by students’ questions. Questions such as “What do we need to prepare?”, “How should we set the price?”, and “How can we attract more customers?” led naturally from one to another, deepening the inquiry. The children applied their learning from these questions to the planning and running of the flea market. Through this question-driven, transdisciplinary process, they demonstrated strong agency, reflection, collaboration, and the attributes of young IB learners.
