Key Concepts for Cambridge International
AS & A-Level Computer Science
• Computational Thinking
Computational thinking is a set of fundamental skills that help produce a solution to a problem. Skills such as abstraction, decomposition, and algorithmic thinking are used to study a problem and design a solution that can be implemented. This may involve using a range of technologies and programming languages.
• Programming Paradigms
A programming paradigm is a way of thinking about or approaching problems. There are many different programming styles that can be used, which are suited to unique functions, tools, and specific situations. An understanding of programming paradigms is essential to ensure they are used appropriately when designing and building programmes.
• Communication
Communication is a core requirement of computer systems. It includes the ability to transfer data from one device or component to another and an understanding of the rules and methods that are used in this data transfer. Communication could range from the internal transfer of data within a computer system to the transfer of a video across the internet.
• Computer Architecture and Hardware
Computer architecture is the design of the internal operation of a computer system. It includes the rules that dictate how components and data are organised, how data are communicated between components to allow hardware to function. There is a range of architectures, with different components and rules, that are appropriate for different scenarios. All computers comprise a combination of hardware components, ranging from internal components, such as the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and main memory, to peripherals. To produce effective and efficient programmes to run on hardware, it is important to understand how the components work independently and together to produce a system that can be used. Hardware needs software to be able to perform a task. The software allows hardware to become functional. This enables the user to communicate with the hardware to perform tasks.
• Data Representation and Structure
Computers use binary, and understanding how a binary number can be interpreted in many different ways is important. Programming requires an understanding of how data can be organised for efficient access and/or transfer.
Despite its complexity and status as a new subject at FCG, students are excelling in this field, demonstrating remarkable diligence and commitment. They are steadily gaining and applying knowledge in various scenarios. Currently, more than 50% of the syllabus has been covered, and the teaching and learning activities are proceeding as per the planned schedule. Recently, in the Grade 6 Science class, students have been engaged in various classroom inquiry activities to learn about "Biology" and "Engineering." Activities such as "comparing different types of scissors" and "comparing video and written forms of communication" have allowed students to actively participate in experiments. In these activities, students learn how to collect data, ask questions, and engage in group discussions and sharing with their peers. This series of inquiry activities aims to stimulate students' curiosity and spirit of exploration, which will further develop their scientific thinking and problem-solving skills. Additionally, students will gain an awareness of the importance of Science and Engineering in everyday life, developing an interest in further study in related fields.
In the Grade 7 Biology class, we also organised an exciting activity in which we ventured outside the classroom to the playground to conduct a "survey of organisms in the surrounding environment." This activity aimed to provide students with firsthand experience in investigating biodiversity and appreciating the presence of different organisms in the world. Students were divided into different groups, and they needed to conduct a biological survey within a designated area of the playground. They utilised tools such as iPads, magnifying glasses, as well as pens and paper to carefully observe and collect samples of plants, insects, birds, and other organisms. Throughout this activity, students also learnt how to observe and record the characteristics, behaviours, and habitats of organisms accurately. They used observation sheets or notebooks to record the types, quantities and features of the observed organisms. This not only cultivated their observational and recording skills but also aided in their understanding of the importance of biodiversity and ecosystems.
The focus of our Grade 8 studies this semester is "animals." We have engaged in various activities to have a deeper understanding of animals. We observed earthworms and fish in the lab class and learnt about common parasites found in our daily life. Additionally, we have created beautiful "animal bookmarks" and presented our knowledge of "parasites in fish" in the form of a news report at the Learning Exhibition. Through these activities, students not only expand their knowledge of the animal world but also develop their abilities in observation, critical thinking, expression, and hands-on skills. These will have a positive impact on their future learning and life.
We are thrilled to share with you the exciting journey our children are embarking on in their exploration of transportation starting this November. As part of our PYP Unit of Inquiry, titled 'How We Organise Ourselves,' we are focusing on the impact of transportation on our lives. This topic encompasses the key concepts of change, function, and responsibility.
The world of transportation is a captivating subject that sparks curiosity and presents numerous learning opportunities for young minds. Throughout this month, we will delve into various modes of transportation, understanding their functions, and recognising their significance in our daily lives. Our aim is to integrate this topic into multiple aspects of our curriculum, including literacy, mathematics, STEM, and creative arts.
To enhance language skills, expand vocabulary, and improve comprehension abilities, we are engaging in captivating books and stories about different types of vehicles. From cars and trains to aeroplanes and boats, these stories serve as a springboard for language development and comprehension.
During our circle time discussions, we explore the diverse vehicles and their purposes, delve into the patterns found on road signs, and probe into traffic rules and safety through interactive games and engaging songs. By actively participating in these activities, children gain a deeper understanding of transportation concepts and develop a sense of responsibility towards their own safety and the well-being of others.
Through hands-on experiments and observations, our youngest learners investigate the principles of motion and explore the various forces involved in transportation. They have the opportunity to discover how different vehicles are powered and the scientific principles behind their operation. This hands-on approach fosters critical thinking skills and encourages an inquiry-based mindset.
Furthermore, creativity takes flight as our children engage in transportation-themed art and craft projects. Recently, they had the chance to create a vibrant school bus using autumnal warm colours. Through this project, they learned about the basic parts of a school bus and had the opportunity to express their artistic abilities. As they worked on their creations, they joyfully sang along to the well-known song "Wheels on The Bus," adding a lively and interactive element to their learning experience.
We are thrilled by the remarkable growth and captivating exploration taking place within our EY1 classroom throughout this unit of inquiry. By investigating the world of transportation, the children are developing a deeper understanding of how transportation impacts our lives, the changes it brings, its various functions, and the responsibility we have towards its safe and sustainable use.
