Senior School Mathematics Curriculum at FCG: Precise Teaching · Comprehensive Support · Innovative Future

At Fettes College Guangzhou, mathematics is more than just a subject—it is a way of thinking and a fundamental tool for exploring the world. We are dedicated to nurturing future talents with critical thinking skills, innovative abilities, and a global perspective.

Our senior school mathematics curriculum is student-centred, integrating international curriculum frameworks with cutting-edge teaching practices. It creates a comprehensive, three-dimensional mathematics learning ecosystem that features stratified precision, diversified opportunities for growth, and technology integration. This approach enables students to strengthen their foundational knowledge, expand their capabilities, develop core competencies for academic exploration and future success, and open pathways to world-renowned universities.

1.Precise Stratification – Customised Growth Paths

We adhere to the principle of "adaptability" and have built a stratified curriculum framework covering IGCSE and A-Level for grades 9-12. This ensures that students with different foundations can progress at a pace that matches their abilities.

  • Normal Track: Following a "steady and solid" approach, students complete IGCSE Mathematics studies systematically from Grade 9 to 10. From Grade 11 to 12, the focus shifts to core A-Level Mathematics exam points, ensuring students master subject fundamentals and exam-taking skills.

  • Advanced Track: This accelerated pathway is tailored for students with strong mathematics foundations who intend to take A-Level Further Mathematics. They finish the IGCSE Mathematics program in one year (Grade 9) and start AS Mathematics early in Grade 10, allowing ample time to tackle advanced mathematics challenges and prepare for admission to top-tier universities.

2.Extracurricular Support – Covering All-ScenarioNeeds

Through Co-curricular Activities (CCA) and specialised tutoring, we provide students with comprehensive support, including competition training, university application preparation, and the strengthening of foundational knowledge.

Competition Training: Unlocking Problem-Solving Thinking

We offer the "Art of Problem-Solving" CCA course, based on the classic American senior school mathematics competition textbook The Art of Problem Solving and integrated with school-based teaching design. This course systematically develops students' logical reasoning and advanced problem-solving abilities.. It has become a "cradle of growth" for top competition students—our students consistently achieve excellent results in competitions such as the UKMT (UK Mathematics Trust) Competition, American Mathematics Competition (AMC), and the University of Waterloo (Canada) Series Mathematics Competitions. In the 2024–2025 academic year, our school was awarded the "AMC School Merit Roll" by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in recognition of our students' outstanding performance.

University Application Preparation: Conquering Top University Thresholds

For students aiming to apply to the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and G5 universities in the UK, we offer exclusive tutoring courses for admission exams. These courses focus on core exams including MAT (Mathematics Admission Test), PAT (Physics Aptitude Test), TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission), and ESAT (Engineering Science Admission Test). Through a closed-loop training model of "key point explanation + past exam simulation + error review", the courses help students meet the high-level requirements of top universities for mathematical thinking and academic potential, enhancing their competitiveness in applications.

Foundation Strengthening: Solidifying Learning Fundamentals

We offer mathematics courses across all levels, including IGCSE, AS, A2, and AP.. For students who face challenges with in-class learning, we provide "small-class  and personalised" tutoring. The tutoring content closely aligns with in-class progress, ranging from basic concept review to typical problem analysis, helping students fill knowledge gaps and keep up with the overall learning rhythm.

3.Aligning with Technology – Empowering Future Learning

Amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science, mathematics is shaping the future in unprecedented ways. The Fettes mathematics curriculum embraces these technological advancements, promoting an interdisciplinary approach to teaching that integrates "mathematics + visualisation + application."

In regular teaching, we incorporate advanced mathematical modelling and dynamic visualisation tools such as Mathematica, GeoGebra, and Desmos. These tools enable students to intuitively grasp abstract concepts such as functions, calculus, vectors, and statistical distributions. At the same time, we encourage students to utilise programming languages like Python and C++, with AI assistance, to implement algorithms for mathematical problems, fostering computational thinking and an awareness of mathematical modelling.

For instance, in the "Numerical Methods" unit of A-Level Mathematics, students write programmes to simulate the Newton-Raphson method for solving equations. This deepens their understanding of convergence and error control, while bridging the gap between theoretical mathematics and practical applications.

This "learning mathematics by doing" teaching model not only enhances the fun and engagement of learning but also comprehensively improves students' mathematical modeling abilities, technological innovation skills, and interdisciplinary integration literacy. It lays a solid foundation for their future studies in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) field.

At Fettes, we believe every student has the potential to excel in mathematics. We are not mere conveyors of standard answers but igniters of sparks of thought. From classrooms to competitions, from paper-and-pen to code, we accompany students on a journey filled with challenges and discoveries. Here, mathematics is not only a stepping stone to prestigious universities but also a way of thinking—a lens through which to understand and transform the world.

With thought as the vessel and technology as the oars, we embark together on a voyage to explore the stars and seas of mathematics at Fettes.
