FCG Primary School Homework Policy

Homework offers the opportunity for our pupils to revisit and consolidate knowledge and concepts that have already been taught in class.

ü Homework helps students consolidate knowledge, form abilities and cultivate habits.

ü Homework will be appropriate to the age, ability and needs of the pupils.

ü Children, teachers and parents have different roles to play in order to ensure that homework is effective.

The teacher should :

• Ensure that the homework instructions are given clearly to the pupil (often the tasks will be started in class).

Set homework tasks that meet the individual learning needs of students.

Set homework which is appropriate to the pupils’ language abilities.

If a student fails to complete homework on time, the teacher should communicate with the student, parent and class tutor(s) to understand why the student fails to complete the homework. Provide specific help, tutoring and adjust the amount of the homework if necessary.

Use academic support or tutor time to allow students to do homework and provide tutoring so that students can finish most of the homework at school.

The teacher must not:

Use mobile phone to assign any homework

Ask students to complete homework using a mobile phone

Assign repetitive homework or punitive homework

Ask students to mark their own homework

Assign parents homework or ask parents to mark homework

The parent should:

Take an interest in the child’s homework and be supportive. For example, by helping with research work on the Internet or discussing the content of some writing. The final product should be the child’s own work.

Ensure appropriate time is planned for homework

If necessary, comment in the on the homework set (we value any comments parents make in this respect)

Pupils should:

Ensure they understand any homework tasks by asking questions in class

Demonstrate a commitment to spending an allocated time on the tasks

Submit the tasks on time

Homework Types

Our school encourages teachers to innovate the types of homework. Teachers should reasonably assign different types of homework, such as written homework, reading homework, Unit of Inquiry homework, physical exercise homework, art appreciation homework, social and labor practice homework, and explore interdisciplinary homework according to the student’s grade, the characteristics of the subject and student's actual needs and ability to complete the homework.

Unit of Inquiry Homework

Unit of inquiry homework usually takes the form of asking questions, finding information from books, people and internet, and doing experiments. The homework is often set over a few days or one to two weeks, as well as holidays.

Optional Homework

• Core subjects should contain an element of optional work (this could be set in a system of “I must do…”, “I should do…” “I could do…”).

Other subjects can also assign optional homework if needed.

Homework schedule

It is a requirement of the Education Bureau that we do not set any written homework for Grade 1 and Grade 2 pupils. Appropriate amount of Grade 1 and 2 homework can be set in those formats, including reading, hands-on activities and parent-child activities. Each class is arranged according to the schedule, and the Chinese homeroom teacher takes the lead to coordinate the time of each subject. According to the timetable, the Chinese homeroom teacher is responsible for coordinating the time of each subject and making the daily homework schedule at the beginning of the term. The total amount of homework for Grade 3 to Grade 6 every day should not exceed 60 minutes.

Teaching and learning research - Homework

The school teaching and learning research should include homework design. The homework design research should include leveled, flexible, personalized homework research, and avoid mechanical, punitive homework.

General requirements for homework marking

Teacher needs to mark all homework assigned. Provide feedback on homework set in a timely and supportive manner

• Every question should be marked with a "" for correct answers and a small "×" for wrong answers or circle the wrong answers

Write the date and grade at the end of the marking. Write a short, motivational comment, as appropriate for the student's grade, with clear suggestions for how to improve

• Write the word "Correction" at the end of the homework if there are errors

Marking should use correct words and eligible handwriting

The teacher needs to track each student's homework and make record, including whether the student complete the homework on time, the content of the homework, the date, and the grade. Ensure that the homework can be used as one of the evidences for formative assessment

Homework feedback

Homework feedback needs to play a positive educational function. Through homework feedback, teacher helps students to solve the difficult questions, break through the difficult points, and expand the key points, plus enable students to complete the homework corrections, and analyze the problems existing in the study, aiming to improve future study.

Homework feedback should be given to students in a timely manner, usually no later than the next class of this subject.

Strengthen the pertinence of homework verbal feedback. For general problems, give verbal feedback to all students for general problems. For individual problems, mark the homework in front of the individual student and give verbal feedback to the individual student or offer individual guidance.

Primary school evaluation of homework design, marking and feedback

The school has incorporated homework design, marking and feedback into the assessment and evaluation of teachers' professional quality and teaching performance. The evaluation mainly contains subject group check and Primary School does spot check.

1. Subject coordinator checks each teacher's homework design, marking and feedback every month, puts forward the improvement requirements in time to those teachers who do not meet the school requirements, urges and helps those teachers to improve, and shares good practices and excellent homework within the subject group.

2. Primary School needs to organize homework check at least once every semester, and choose 20% of the students to check their homework tasks, marking and feedback.

3. Praise and promote learning of excellent homework design, marking and feedback within the subject group and Primary School.

4. The following assessment and evaluation of homework design, marking and feedback need to be included in the annual appraisal of teachers' professional quality and teaching performance.
