Vegetable Exploration

This week’s English Time in EY3 was focused on the letter ‘C’. So, we used all our senses to explore cucumber, carrot, corn, cabbage and courgette. We found that each vegetable looked, smelled and even felt different.  Using the knives very carefully, we cut the vegetables into small pieces including halves and quarters.

We wondered what would happen if the vegetables were left in water. The following day we were amazed to see that the cabbage water had turned purple and the carrot water had turned orange.

Finally, we froze all the cut-up vegetables in ice. Everyone in EY was able to explore the frozen vegetables.  We found that the ice was very cold and hard, but the vegetables were now soft!

Through this hands-on exploration, our EY3 learners didn't just practise the letter 'C'—they developed fine motor skills through careful cutting, engaged their senses through touch and smell, and even applied early math concepts as they created halves and quarters. It's wonderful to see how a simple vegetable investigation can nurture so many areas of learning at once!
