A Look into Third Grade‘s Fairy Tale Themed Chinese Unit and Whole-Book Reading Activity

This semester, the third-grade Chinese curriculum centres around the theme “Step into the World of Fairy Tales.” Through a combination of intensive in-class reading and whole-book reading activities, the children have embarked on a journey brimming with imagination and literary charm, experiencing the mysterious power hidden within words.

01

In-Depth Classroom Reading: Unlocking the Magic of Fairy Tales Through Prediction and Imagination

During the fairy tale unit, the children read classic stories such as The Old House That Never Arrived, The Determined Tortoise, and The Puppy Learning to Bark. They learned the strategy of “prediction,” using plot developments, life experiences, and boundless imagination to speculate on story outcomes and appreciate the narrative charm of fairy tales. By identifying key words and phrases, the children not only experienced the wonder and fun of the stories but also gained a deeper understanding of character traits—such as the old house’s resilience, the tortoise’s determination, and the puppy’s growth—discovering truth, goodness, and beauty within the texts.

Extended Learning: Whole-Book Reading to Build Language Skills and Ignite Thinking

To enhance the reading experience, the third graders participated in a whole-book reading activity featuring Andersen’s Fairy Tales. Immersed in classics like The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid, the children read while taking notes and capturing phrases rich in linguistic charm. This helped them develop their language skills and broaden their perspectives. Additionally, we initiated a “Reading Record Likes Activity,” where peer evaluations and teacher encouragement sparked the children’s enthusiasm for reading, ensuring that every moment of focus and reflection was recognised and valued.
