Our EY4 students have enjoyed a lively and engaging start to our second Unit of Inquiry: How We Organise Ourselves.
Their curiosity has focused on everyday products, from favourite snacks to toys. To explore this, we transformed our role-play area into a bakery, where the children investigate how goods are made and sold, using our cashier station to learn about money in context.
Our learning journey began with the book Do Bees Make Butter?, which sparked an inquiry into production processes. The children researched and even made their own butter, while discussing dairy sources and reflecting on our dairy farm visit—tracing milk’s journey from farm to table.
After reading How to Make an Apple Pie, we embarked on a virtual global tour, discovering that cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka and sugar from Jamaica. This inspired us to bake our own apple and pumpkin pies!
We were also delighted to welcome Eden's grandmother, who taught us how to make traditional dumplings. The students observed, filled, and folded their own, while also exploring how other foods like peanut butter and jelly are produced.
Currently, we are investigating packaging and transportation—deepening our understanding of how products reach us. It has been a wonderful month of hands-on discovery, full of creativity and real-world learning.
