IGCSE Grade 10

What makes people work harder: money, praise, responsibility, or simply feeling trusted?

That is one of the big questions behind Topic 2: People in Business, recently revisited by our IGCSE Business Studies students in preparation for the summer exams.

ENTERPRISE

The answer matters. Research suggests that

  • Engaged teams are linked to 23% higher profitability

  • strong management can raise team output by 20%

  • poor management can be so costly that replacing one unhappy employee may cost up to twice their annual salary

In other words, effective management is not just helpful — it can have a major impact on organisational success.

This is what makes the topic so interesting. Students are not simply learning business terms; they are stepping into the shoes of real managers, considering how different leadership styles, motivational methods, and communication strategies can influence the performance of a team. Just as importantly, they are evaluating the consequences of those decisions, developing the judgement needed to explain not only what a business should do, but why.

Alongside this, there has also been a strong focus on exam technique and assessment practice to ensure students feel confident and well prepared for their May examinations. By combining business theory with application, analysis, and structured exam practice, students are building both subject knowledge and the skills needed to succeed.

BTEC Grade 10

What does business success really look like on paper?

For our BTEC Business students, it means far more than just learning key terms: it means putting knowledge into action.

As Unit 3: Finance in Business draws to a close, students have taken a hands-on approach to finance, using case study material to apply their knowledge to realistic business scenarios. From constructing break-even charts to preparing cash flow forecast documents, they have been developing the kinds of financial tools businesses use every day.

But this unit goes beyond simply producing documents. Learners are also being challenged to think critically about what the figures actually mean — and how a business might use them to evaluate performance, manage risk, and improve its financial position.

In this way, the unit brings finance to life. Students are not just learning about business decisions; they are learning how to make sense of them, question them, and use financial evidence to support them.
