PS | A Glance of Grade 5 Transdisciplinary Learning

Our Grade 5 UOI learners have been exploring the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works with the central idea: “Inventions over time allow societies to function more efficiently.” Their curiosity, creativity and collaboration have led to an inspiring unit of inquiry—and a set of bright, practical ideas for the future.


What we explored:

Central idea: Inventions over time allow societies to function more efficiently.
Key focus: How inventions respond to human needs and change the way people live and work.
Learner profile attributes emphasised: Thinkers (designing solutions), Communicators (sharing ideas), and Risk-takers (trying imaginative ideas).

INVENT & DESIGN

To move beyond research and thinking, Grade 5 students chose to take action by designing their own inventions—tools and systems imagined to help society function more efficiently. We began with real problems that affect our daily lives at school and at home. Students listed issues they notice (for example, time wasted between tasks, lunchtime queues, lost belongings, or caring for the environment) and then used those problems as the starting point for creative solutions.

IMAGINATION & EXPRESSION

We encouraged artistic license: students were invited to imagine how technology and society might advance in the future. Because we can’t predict every future development, this freedom allowed learners to think boldly and inventively—combining real-world understanding with imaginative possibilities. Some designs blended current technology with futuristic features, while others offered clever low-tech solutions that improve efficiency and wellbeing.

FROM STETCHES TO SOLUTIONS

每位学生先画出原始草图,然后使用人工智能工具帮助润色与可视化他们的发明。AI辅助了打磨过程——生成逼真的图像并增强设计细节——同时学生仍然保有点子与创意选择的所有权。最终形成的是一组兼具创意、目的性与对真实问题深思熟虑回应的原创发明作品集。
