The children in Whale Class (EY3) are wrapping up this exciting exploration into how the world works with a focus on natural phenomena. After applying their research and thinking skills, the children determined that natural phenomena are events that occur in nature by themselves, without human intervention.

Extending into other areas of learning such as literacy

We delved deeper into the phenomena of day and night and the seasons. One question that came up from one of the children was why we have day and night. To help the children come to this understanding and visualise the phenomenon, we created a box in which the children could observe the rotation of the earth. We added a tiny flag to the globe, which the children declared indicated China and marked our location.

The children watched the earth and noticed that it turned and as it did, they noticed that it was bright while facing the sun and dark as it turned away from the sun. The children all came to their own clear understanding of why or how day and night occur.

The children created a seasons tree as we explored the different seasons and how people adapt to them. The children sorted photos of themselves, based on their clothing and the environment, to match the images to the seasons.

We looked at the data we had collected about the daily temperature and were reminded of the especially cold snap of weather we had during the week of our winter festival. We recalled the less fortunate people we had learned about earlier in the semester on our Bare Bones Day and the children shared their thoughts of what those friends might need in this cold weather.

We thought about our first UOI,  after reading a story called The World Family, we realised we are all one big family! Building on our project of 100 ways of showing our love and appreciation, we brainstormed about how we could show our love, care, and appreciation for those in our World Family who are in need. The children made several wonderful suggestions, some a little easier to attempt than others!

This led to a big action project of gathering donations to support those facing challenges.

Some children immediately began looking around our classroom for things we could donate and thinking about things they have at home that they would like to send. The children took the message back to their families and collected some things from home to share with those in need. The children then made a video message to involve others in our school community!

Could you help us to help others?

If you'd like to contribute, please donate clothes, toys, stationery, blankets, towels, toiletries, and dry food, placing them in a box or bag labeled "EY3 Donation" in the designated collection box at the EY and Senior School Building.

Let's declutter and make a positive difference for someone in need!
