Dynamic and Engaging EAL Classes: Learning Another Language Can Be Exciting!
G9 EAL Core classes break the stereotype that learning another language has to be boring. By incorporating real-life activities, collaboration, presentations, and multidisciplinary topics, these classes make language learning exciting and engaging, fostering proficiency and skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Real-Life Activities: EAL classes immerse students in authentic language experiences, replicating real-world situations through role-playing, and using their research skills to solve real- life problems too.
For example, in our unit on traveling, students learned to plan their trip and create an itinerary. They were also asked to make a budget and exchange currencies, which will be beneficial in the future when they travel.
Another fun activity during the unit on Food was when the students pretended to be food blog reviewers, they used different adjectives to describe food and wrote food reviews.
Collaboration and Presentation: Students work together on group projects, discussions, and presentations, improving their language skills while enhancing teamwork and communication abilities.
Multidisciplinary Learning: EAL classes cover topics from various disciplines, connecting language learning with history, science, literature, and culture, providing a broader understanding of the world.
Healthy Competition: Occasional pop quizzes create a fun and competitive environment, motivating students to excel in their language proficiency.
We are thrilled to announce that two-thirds of our Grade 11 students have achieved satisfying IELTS scores - their overall band score is at least 6.5, a common requirement for college application overseas. This is a not only proof that the English department has achieved significant results in the differentiated teaching plan for Grades 9 and 10 in the Senior School, but also the personalised tutoring system for Grade 11. This represents a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the hard work and dedication of both teachers and students in improving English language learning.
As we move forward after the AS exams, we understand that some of our Grade 11 students may need additional support to further increase their IELTS scores. Therefore, we are offering one-to-one or one-to-two tutorials to those who require extra assistance. These tutorials will be held until the start of summer vacation, providing students with the individualised attention students need to excel in the IELTS exam.
In addition to the tutorials, we are excited to announce that our school will be hosting an IELTS summer camp for senior students in the first two weeks of the summer holidays. It is designed to help senior school students either consolidate the IELTS foundation course (Grades 9 and 10) or prepare students for the IELTS exam in a fun and interactive environment (Grades 10 and 11). Through a combination of engaging activities, practice tests, and expert guidance, students will have the opportunity to hone their IELTS skills and boost their confidence before taking the exam.
We believe that with the right support and resources, students can achieve their desired IELTS scores and unlock a world of need to succeed or even surpass their own expectations. We encourage all senior school students to take advantage of these opportunities and make the most of the resources available to them. With hard work, perseverance and the right attitude, there is no limit to what they can achieve. We look forward to seeing them thrive and succeed in their IELTS preparation journey.
