Approaches to Learning (ATLs) are a set of skills that are important for students to develop. They are the communication skills, social skills, self-management skills, research skills and thinking skills. These skills not only support academic success but also prepare students for lifelong learning. In our library, by providing abundant resources, collaborative spaces, and targeted programmes, we support students in developing their ATLs. Moreover, through various activities and workshops going beyond books and the physical library space to strengthen and enhance ATL skills ultimately, we strive to help students achieve their goals.

During every noon break, students can enjoy some silent games in our library, such as puzzles, rubrics, and chess. In April, during 22nd - 26th, our students celebrated the “World Earth Day and World Book Day” by a series of activities during noon breaks. We read books about the Earth to deepen our understanding toward the importance of environmental protection. We planted the Love seeds to bring some GREEN to our planet. And we did DIY Shrinky Dink keychains to call for attention to this theme.

The Shrinky Dink keychain soon became a popular DIY activity among students. During the DIY process, students need to come up with creative ideas on how to design the handcraft, and need to consider what kind of technics to deal with any kinds of situations happen. This effectively helped develop their thinking skills and self-management skills, because the students need to be patient and engaged during the entire process and adjust themselves promptly to make a most successful keychain.

This semester we start a Reading and Baking workshop during CCAs. Through this workshop, students fully utilise their ATLs. They research and study hard the bilingual recipes before start, they collaborate to use their hands to make a dough, they communicate and think hard to figure out how to successfully separate the egg white from the egg yolk, and they experience together to peel an onion to laugh and cry!

In our beautiful baking room far away from the library, they not only read the recipes and take notes, but also make the dough, use the batter,  and whip the egg white. They harvest more than just the delicious desserts, but some novel experiences and live knowledge.

Therefore, the library serves as a hub for knowledge, skills, and opportunities beyond the classroom and books, striving to empower students to become lifelong learners and successful contributors to society.
