As we progress through this semester, we are delighted to share an update on the work taking place within our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme. Our focus this semester has been on strengthening students’ linguistic capabilities to foster academic growth and equip them with skills that will prepare them for an interconnected world.

One of the most notable endeavours introduced this semester is the structured Cambridge Practice Testing. These practice tests are invaluable, not only because they equip students with essential language skills but also because they encourage self-assessment and resilience. This programme follows a carefully designed framework that aligns each year group with their respective learning stages, reflecting the recognised CEFR language levels. We are pleased to share that the first practice tests for this academic year have been successfully completed, with the official tests scheduled for June.

In Phase 1, students are preparing for the A1 Movers test. Through engaging activities, such as interactive storytelling, role-playing, and vocabulary-based games, Phase 1 students are building a strong foundation in English. This test encourages students to use simple phrases and sentences, improving their confidence in basic conversation. They have been practising with thematic vocabulary lists and sentence-building exercises, working towards basic comprehension and the ability to describe familiar situations, people, and routines.

In Phase 2, students are working towards the A2 Key level. Here, the focus is on advancing their conversational abilities, basic grammar, and reading comprehension. Students are introduced to real-life scenarios and are learning how to engage in more detailed discussions about familiar topics. With targeted lessons on describing past experiences, expressing preferences, and giving basic instructions, students in Phase 2 are becoming more adept at understanding and participating in conversations. They are also working with written comprehension tasks to help them understand more complex texts and structure their thoughts in writing.

Phase 3 students are progressing towards the B1 Preliminary test, involving a deeper exploration of English. The aim here is to build fluency and introduce more challenging reading and writing tasks, enhancing students' ability to express thoughts coherently. The Phase 3 programme also focuses on more sophisticated grammar structures, vocabulary extension, and comprehension of longer texts, such as articles and short stories. Speaking activities, group discussions, and presentations help refine their expressive skills, which are essential at this intermediate stage.

Finally, Phase 4 students are preparing for the B2 First level. At this stage, students engage in rigorous academic exercises that strengthen their critical thinking, persuasive writing, and analytical reading skills. The practice tests for this level challenge students to write essays, summarise information, and engage in debates and discussions, building the skills needed for more advanced academic work. This preparation is essential as it supports their readiness for IGCSE examinations and beyond.

Each phase has been thoughtfully designed to challenge students at their current level while giving them a clear pathway to progress further. We encourage parents to engage with students about their EAL activities and ask about what they have learned to help reinforce their skills at home. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to empower our students for a bright and bilingual future.
