Our recent Grade 1 PYP unit, Who We Are, invited students to explore the central idea that social relationships build personal identity. Through stories, discussion, and shared experiences, students reflected on how the people in their lives help shape who they are and how they see themselves.

Building naturally from our previous How We Organize Ourselves unit, learning shifted from recognising roles in the school community to exploring personal relationships.

Using texts such as The Invisible Boy, Be Kind and Thank you, Omu! , students inquired into inclusion, kindness, and support. They represented these connections through their My World Flip Books and proundly shared their learning by presenting "Kindness Starts with Me" hearts in assembly.

A focus on growth mindset supported students in becoming more reflective and confident learners. The unit led to meaningful student action, including an Appreciation Picnic to thank staff members, allowing students to express genuine gratitude.

This unit was a powerful reminder that identity, belonging, and relationships sit at the heart of learning.
