SS|Journey of Physics

Ninth-grade IGCSE Physics is a "new" beginning. This semester, we have studied the measurement of basic physical quantities, the description of the motion of objects, the application of Newton's three laws to problem-solving, the exploration of Hooke's Law, the analysis of free fall and the motion of objects with air resistance. In just two months, facing teaching materials and assignments from all over the UK, the students not only learned new content but also gradually developed new learning methods.

对于九年级的同学来讲,IGCSE物理是一个“新”的开始。本学期我们学习了基本物理量的测量、物体的运动状态的描述,应用牛顿三定律解决问题、探究胡克定律、分析自由落体和含空气阻力情况下物体的运动等知识。两个月的时间,面对全英的教学材料和作业,同学们不仅在努力学习新的内容,也在逐步养成全新的学习方法。


So, what are some effective learning methods?

那么行之有效的学习方法有哪些呢?


There are four main aspects: pre-class academic vocabulary, in-class note-taking, practising answer techniques, and post-class consolidation and improvement.

主要有四个方面:课前学术单词的巩固,课中笔记的整理和答题技巧的训练,课后的巩固提升。


The teacher compiled and printed a physical copy of the semester's vocabulary booklet. In addition, using Quizlet, they created word exercises combined with illustrations. Students familiarise themselves with key vocabulary at the beginning of the class and then complete various forms of enjoyable vocabulary assessments after class to strengthen their foundation.

除了纸质的学期单词册,我们也在利用Quizlet建立图例结合的单词练习。学生在课堂刚开始时先熟悉课堂重点单词,课后再完成多种形式的趣味单词考察,以此打牢基础。


Taking notes is also an art. Factors such as recording headings, organising them clearly, emphasizing important points, and using distinct colours can greatly enhance the quality of notes.

另外,记笔记也是一门艺术,标题记录、排列清晰、着重标记、颜色分明等技巧可以大大提升笔记的质量。

The homework is a big challenge for the students, mainly due to the large number of unfamiliar words. Translating the entire passage takes a long time, so we can first accurately grasp the requirements of the question through command words (such as explain, calculate, describe and state...), then highlight the data units, identify changes in the conditions of the question (such as increase, decrease), and analyze whether there are implicit conditions in the question (for example, "comes to a stop" indicating a final velocity of 0). This way, we can roughly understand the meaning of the question.

全英的作业对学生们来说是一大挑战,难点在于生词量太多。通篇翻译要占用较长时间,那我们通过命令词(例如explain, calculate, describe, state...)可先准确把握题目要求,再勾画数据单位突出重点,判断题干条件变化(如increase, decrease),另外分析题干是否有隐含条件(例如comes to a stop, 表示末速度为0),就可以大致分析出题目的含义。


This week, Grade 10 Class B conducted a classroom group presentation on the topic of energy. The group members were given 15 minutes to read assigned literature, collaborate to create a PowerPoint presentation, and then deliver a 5-minute speech in both Chinese and English on stage. The students presented an excellent display, using visuals and specific examples, and confidently and fluently delivered their presentation.

本周十年级B班就能量的话题进行了课堂小组汇报,小组成员需要在15分钟内阅读指定文献,分工合作完成PPT制作,并上台进行5分钟的中英文演讲,学生们图文并茂,结合具体实例,大方并流利地完成了精彩的汇报展出。

G10A Physics Course

G10A is a two-year IGCSE(International General Certificate of Secondary Education) class, and they have already completed 75% of the curriculum in their Grade 9. Therefore, their task for this semester is to study the remaining content and then begin preparing for the IGCSE exams, allowing them relatively ample time. In the past few weeks since the start of the school year, students have covered the Electromagnetism portion of the curriculum, learning how electric motors work and how generators produce electrical energy.

十年级A班是两年制IGCSE班级,他们在九年级的时候已经完成了75%的学习进度。因此学生们本学期的任务是学习剩余部分的内容,然后即可开始备考IGCSE,时间相对充裕。开学以来的几个星期,学生们完成了电磁部分的学习,学习了电动机是如何工作的,以及发电机又是如何输出电能的。


A-Level Physics Course

G11 students have entered the first year of A-Level studies, specifically the AS (Advanced Subsidiary) stage. Compared to the IGCSE curriculum, AS content is more in-depth and challenging. Since the beginning of the school year, physics lessons have covered six chapters of the AS curriculum, including Kinematics, Uniform accelerated linear motion, Dynamics, Equilibrium and resolution of forces, Work and energy, and Momentum. As their knowledge deepens, students are gradually finding solutions to some of the challenges they face during IGCSE studies, gaining a deeper understanding of physics.

十一年级的学生们已经步入A-Level学习的第一年——AS阶段。相较于IGCSE的内容,AS的内容更加深入,也会更具挑战。自开学以来,物理已经完成了AS的六个章节的学习,分别是:运动学、匀变速直线运动、动力学、力的平衡与分解、做功和能量以及动量。随着知识的深入,学生们在IGSCE学习中的困惑也逐渐迎刃而解,对物理学科有了更深刻的认识。


In Grade 12, the focus is on consolidating students' A-Level foundation. The course mainly involves sharing extracurricular physics knowledge, such as studying topics beyond the syllabus, participating in physics competitions, and practicing for admission exams at Oxford and Cambridge.

十二年级课上内容除了巩固学生们的A-Level基础,内容大多为课外物理知识的分享,比如:大纲之外的知识的学习,物理奥赛,以及牛津剑桥入学考试的练习。
