PS | Leaning and Applying: Technology in the PYP

Technology plays a crucial role in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Fettes College Guangzhou, immersing students in the interplay between learning technology, learning about technology, and learning through technology. It brings about change, transforming our ways of thinking and doing. In an inquiry-based programme that aims to develop international-mindedness and the attributes of the learner profile, technology is integrated to support learning.



In Grade 4, during the unit of inquiry "How the World Works," students explore the concept of trade in daily life. As part of their inquiry, they learned how to run a sports club, utilising technology skills such as organising and visualising data, using spreadsheets and creating club logos with pixel art.



   
   


   
   

Moving on to Grade 5, the unit of inquiry "Sharing the Planet" focuses on conflict resolution. To enhance their understanding, students use iMovie to edit video clips, giving them the freedom to make their own choices while creating meaningful content.









 
   

Technology, viewed broadly as a tool or resource, not only facilitates and expands learning possibilities but also encompasses coding, communication, information, design, and innovation. It serves as a learning extension, fostering critical, creative, and transfer thinking, as well as systems and computational thinking.

In our bilingual immersive language environment, word mats are employed as valuable visual tools to aid primary-level students in comprehending subject-specific terms in ICT. These mats provide a clear and organised display of key vocabulary, enabling students to understand and remember important concepts. With vibrant visuals and concise explanations, word mats actively engage students in their ICT learning journey. Additionally, students collaboratively create word mats using vocabulary cards at the end of each unit, allowing us to assess their understanding of key terms.


 
     






By integrating technology effectively into the PYP curriculum and utilising word mats as visual aids, we aim to foster a deep understanding of the subject matter and promote active engagement among our students.
