MS | Music in the Middle School

Recently, in Grade 6 and 7 Music lessons, we carried out an inquiry learning task with the theme of " Building Elements of Music" where students explored questions, such as:


  • What are the Elements of Music?


  • What different stimuli do composers use when creating and composing music?


  • How does knowledge of the Elements of Music allow us to communicate more effectively?


  • How is music created?

Building Elements of Music allows students to get the opportunity to engage in active music-making, knowledge and understanding in terms of performing, composing, listening, evaluating and responding.  



Students learn about Pitch, Dynamics, Duration, Tempo, Texture, Articulation and Silence and are introduced to Graphic Notation and Graphic Scores.




Additionally, students are preparing a whole class performance project so they can review and reflect on what they have learned in a practical way. The whole class performance consists of an interdisciplinary approach, including music, drama, body movement/dancing, playing and singing, depending on the specific piece of music to prepare. The whole class project performance as a form of assessment might be presented in front of a public audience.  



Grade 8 is exploring "What Makes a Good Song?" Students explore Hooks/Riffs, Structure, Melody and Lyrics through listening and analysis and performing parts of each song as short musical arrangements. Students learn about different components/sections within, Melodic Motion (Conjunct and Disjunct Motion) and Lyrics within case studies and a range of examples of popular songs.



The unit will end with students creating their own musical arrangement of a popular song in their chosen style/genre.  This concept of “cover version” is explored by listening and examining a range of different musical arrangements of the same song for stylistic and elemental changes.



Additionally, students are preparing to be involved in a whole class performance, which is the same as the grades 6 and 7 project, so they can review and reflect on what they have learned in a practical way.
