In the Whale Class this week our students have been actively applying their research and knowledge! The EY3 Little Whales have embarked on a captivating exploration of symbols as a powerful tool for visual communication. Their journey began by searching for symbols within our school environment and documenting their findings through drawings.

SYMBOL

EXPLORATION

Taking their exploration a step further, the children categorised signs they had discovered. They sorted the various signs into three distinct categories with enthusiasm and attentiveness. They identified signs that conveyed what actions were prohibited, which they observed were predominantly red. They also noticed signs that served as warnings to exercise caution, were often in yellow. Furthermore, they recognised signs that provided valuable information about nearby facilities or suggested appropriate actions and found that these signs were predominantly blue or green in colour.

SIGNS

The children then applied this newfound understanding and knowledge in a useful and meaningful way. Scouting out the 'indoor' playground, fondly referred to their class as "the toy playground," the children spotted areas needing signs. The EY3 students' creativity and thoughtfulness shone through as they generated great ideas for crafting signs that would benefit all children playing there; signs that will inform visitors to the playground of rules and safety precautions, and show the proper placement of toys and equipment.

CREATE SIGNS

The children jumped into action, translating their ideas into reality. They eagerly created signs depicting what not to do, such as climbing up the slide or lifting it off the ground. They also crafted warning signs to caution against approaching the edge of the stairs. In addition, the children created signs to inform every one of the designated areas to park the vehicles, bicycles, and wheelbarrows.

USE

OF SIGNS

It has been remarkable to witness how the children's growing awareness of symbols has sparked their imagination and expanded their perception of the world around them. They have begun to recognise opportunities for the use of signs and symbols in various contexts, both inside and outside the classroom. We are excited to continue this journey into the exploration of symbols and their many applications in our ever-evolving world.
