1

This week in EY2 Owl Class we began our new unit of inquiry; exploring how we organise ourselves through the lens of transportation and communities, which started with a big walk around our wonderful campus in search of different modes of transport!

2

We explored first-hand the wheels on the bus do in fact go round and round! Next week we will get to take a ride on the school bus!

3

This topic came at the perfect time as we also learned a new sound this week – the letter sound Nn as in the sound an airplane makes!

The children transformed into planes, flying through the sky, singing, “Hear the airplane, Nnnnnn...”.

We flew on the Nn plane around the world, checked tickets, soared through the night, admired stars, snacked, and flew back to EY2!

“Noodles, please!” “Nuts, please.” “Nori, please.”

4

The children then got working on building their own planes! Painting the body. Decorating the wings and assembling the plane! Now all that’s left is to take off!

We also used cars and trains to trace the letter “N n” and even used our bodies to form the letter!

5

In Maths, the children helped the cars find their correct parking spot, matching the numbers on the vehicles to the parking lot with the corresponding number of dots! We also worked on our pattern-making skills with stickers of different modes of transport!

6

The children conducted hands-on observations with bicycles and cars, documented their findings, and then compared the similarities and differences between the two modes of transport.

7

The children have already provided some interesting questions that will help guide our learning journey! Questions like, “How do aeroplanes fly? Why did people invent trains or make cars? Why do we need traffic lights?” Some children also developed a keen interest in horse-drawn vehicles after seeing our horses on our transport walkabout, and discovering that, before trains, buses, and cars, people rode in horse-drawn carts and carriages!

Next, drawing inspiration from our first learner question, we will explore the components that make up various vehicles and how these components contribute to the vehicles' functionality.

The children are already building communities!

We welcome any experts in the field of transport or town and regional planning to visit our class and share their insights with us!
