MS|Exciting Progress in Digital Design

This year, our middle school students have made an impressive start in digital design, diving into the MYP design cycle, which consists of four essential skills: Inquiring and Analysing, Developing Ideas, Creating the Solution, and Evaluating. Each class has embarked on a project that allows students to explore these skills in depth, while also focusing on the required criteria for each stage.

Robotics and Blockly Coding

Grade 6 students kicked off their journey with robotics, using the Blockly coding language to control a robot in a virtual environment. This hands-on approach not only made learning engaging but also allowed students to grasp coding fundamentals. They then applied their skills to control sprites, movements, and actions, creating outstanding solutions and innovative applications. The creativity and enthusiasm displayed by our sixth graders have set a strong foundation for their future projects.

Game Design and Microcontrollers

Moving into Grade 7, students have taken their coding skills to the next level by designing engaging games using Blockly code. This experience has helped them learn how to control objects and manage scores effectively. Recently, the curriculum expanded to include microcontrollers and MicroPython, introducing students to the ESP32 controller. They are now working on various applications for different scenarios, fostering their problem-solving abilities and technical skills. The excitement in the classroom is palpable as students create functional prototypes that showcase their learning.

App Design Focus

In Grade 8, the focus shifts to design-based lessons centred around app design. Students are tasked with creating their own apps, integrating functionalities using a block-based coding language. This project not only encourages creativity but also challenges students to think critically about user experience and application functionality. As they work on their designs, students are developing a deeper understanding of both coding and the design process, preparing them for future challenges in technology.

The progress in our digital design classes has been nothing short of remarkable. Students across all grades are demonstrating great abilities in coding, problem-solving, and design. Their enthusiasm for learning and willingness to tackle complex challenges are truly inspiring.


As we continue to explore the realms of digital design, we are excited to see how our students will apply their newfound skills in future projects. The collaborative environment encourages innovation and creativity, ensuring that our middle school students are well-prepared for the technological demands of the future.
