Rainy-Day Wonders in EY2 Owl Class

Despite all the rain over the past few weeks, nothing could dampen the spirits of the EY2 Owl class! As part of our unit of inquiry on how we express ourselves through play, we explored the fascinating connection between play and weather. Equipped with raincoats, boots, and umbrellas, the children embraced the rainy days with enthusiasm, turning every puddle into an opportunity for learning and fun.

Their curiosity about rain and how it comes about led to some creative hypotheses—one of our favourites being, “The clouds need to pee, but can’t find a bathroom!” Inspired by these imaginative ideas, we launched into hands-on STEAM explorations of the water cycle. We observed how water spilled outside disappeared in the sun, then recreated the process indoors by boiling water so the children could watch vapour rise and condense, just like clouds forming and raining.

Our “cloud in a jar” experiment was another highlight, allowing the children to see how temperature differences move clouds and create rain.

Through these playful investigations, our young inquirers developed their observation, reasoning, and communication skills, truly embracing a spirit of learning through wonder, curiosity, and discovery.

Tuning in with a story: Poppy, the brave little cloud!

Engaging all our faculties in learning:

Singing in the rain!

Let’s go see what happened to the water!

It’s raining colours!
