Adolescence is a wonderful and sensitive period. In this special stage of growth, we aim to help every student establish a positive and healthy mental state through education, support, and assisting them in understanding the psychological and physical changes that occur during adolescence. Therefore, the Fettes College Guangzhou Middle School recently conducted a series of psychological lectures on adolescence.
Curiosity about sexuality during adolescence is a very common and normal phenomenon. During this stage, due to bodily and physiological changes, teenagers begin to develop an interest and curiosity in sexuality and related topics. This curiosity is a part of exploring their own bodies. In the lectures, we discussed the developmental changes in the body during adolescence, including the appearance of physical characteristics, the development of gender features, and adjustments in the endocrine system. We emphasised to the students that these changes are normal and natural, and it is important for everyone to approach sex education with the right mindset, accepting and respecting their own curiosity, while also understanding the appropriate time, place, and manner in which to explore these issues.
In the lectures, we explored the fluctuations of emotions and feelings during adolescence, as well as the impact of these changes on individual mental health. We taught students emotional management techniques to help them recognise and cope with their emotions, and we reminded everyone that seeking appropriate support and help is available when needed.
Adolescence is also an important period for developing self-identity and shaping self-image. During this time in one’s life, respect and acceptance become particularly important. We encourage everyone to respect personal boundaries, cultivate a positive self-image, and avoid being excessively influenced by external factors. Establishing healthy interpersonal relationships and learning conflict resolution skills are also emphasised. By actively listening, expressing oneself correctly, and explaining one's own viewpoints, we promote positive social interactions.
Adolescence is a stage filled with challenges and opportunities, requiring support, understanding, and guidance. Adolescents should be encouraged to explore their self-identity; establish healthy interpersonal relationships; develop skills to cope with stress; and manage their emotions. Through the education they receive at FCG, and the support of parents and guardians, we help them successfully navigate this stage of their lives, building a positive and fulfilling future.
