At Fettes College Guangzhou, Character Education is not simply a lecture. We integrate the international IB PYP concept with the national compulsory education (CNC) curriculum, using a teaching model that emphasises inquiry-based learning, classroom tasks, and sharing. Through the process of learning, sharing, and completing tasks, students acquire core values and integrate them into their lives, shaping their good character.
For Grade 1 students, we combine the PYP inquiry unit "Who Am I" with CNC's orientation and health education to facilitate integrated learning. The unit, "About Me," demonstrates their willingness to let others understand them, while "My Daily Schedule" expresses their good understanding of their routine.
Grade 2 students express their love and admiration for individuals who contribute to the community through their integrated learning activity and unit "Community Character Stories."
The Grade 3 students’ unit, "What My Parents Do for Me," reflects their deep appreciation and gratitude for their parents' efforts, while "Safety Comes First" demonstrates their knowledge of how to protect their own safety.
Grade 4 students demonstrate their ability to apply knowledge across subjects and utilise the advantages of teamwork. They express various positive themes excellently through beautifully designed class emblems. Their works, " My ideas on How to Protect the Environment," reflects their rich creativity and sense of responsibility in environmental conservation, energy-saving, and recycling.
During the learning process, Grade 5 students show great interest in traditional culture. They independently explore the historical evolution of Chinese characters.
In the UK, there is a concept that morality is "caught" rather than "taught." This is reflected in character education, where students are not required to memorise moral principles but instead develop good character and habits from within, and in, their daily lives. At the same time, students also achieve the PYP learner profile goals, such as being reflective, communicative, and caring. These qualities will benefit them throughout their lives.
