PS | PS Library - Embracing a Student-Centred Approach: A Catalyst for Our Library’s Growth

The students are the driving force behind our services, resources, and initiatives. This article will explore how our library’s student-centred approach creates an environment that empowers us to thrive academically, intellectually, and personally.

Cultivating a Love for Reading

Our library is dedicated to nurturing a love for reading among students. Our diverse collection of books cannot develop without the involvement of our students. They will recommend any good books they read to us, and soon those books will become a hit. Grace from Grade 4 recommended Fushigi Dagashiya Zenitendō to us, and soon it was favoured by Vivi from Grade 3.

Engaging Activities

To meet the curiosities of our students, we organise a wide range of activities to provide our students opportunities to explore new interests, acquire practical skills, and discover passions beyond the classroom. During April, we celebrated Earth Day and World Book Day. Together we read, we researched, we explored, we created, and we enjoyed!

Collaborative Spaces for Engagement

We offer vibrant, flexible spaces that encourage group work, discussions, and brainstorming sessions. During noon breaks, one of the silent games gaining popularity among our students is the jigsaw puzzle. They will work in pairs or groups. They collaborate and show teamwork and celebrate their achievement when they complete it!

Student-Led Initiatives

The student voices are essential in shaping our library’s offerings. We provide platforms for our students to take ownership of their library experience, express their ideas and interests, and collaborate with like-minded peers. Clara from Grade 1 approached us one day saying that she wanted to share a story with the other students. From this initiative, we started the story-telling session during noon breaks. It began from Grade 1, then Grade 2 and beyond; even our secondary students join in the joy of reading aloud to others.

We are very proud of our students; they are the catalyst for helping us to grow.
