Grade 9 Exploring Supply, Demand, and Elasticity

This semester, Grade 9 Economics students have been exploring the core concepts of supply and demand. They’ve studied how substitute goods (like tea vs. coffee) and complementary goods (like cars and fuel) influence demand, as well as how time frames affect supply and producers’ ability to respond to market changes.

Now, students are diving into elasticity—a key concept in market behaviour. They are exploring questions such as:

  • Why can some companies charge high prices without losing customers?

  • Why do governments impose sin taxes on goods like alcohol and cigarettes to increase revenue?

These real-world examples help students apply theory to everyday decision-making.

Students are also encouraged to think like business owners. Would they prefer to sell a product with inelastic demand, like life-saving medication, where price changes have little effect on demand? On the supply side, they are learning how businesses can ensure elasticity of supply—quickly increasing production to take advantage of rising prices. Companies with flexible production or large inventories often gain a competitive edge.

Through these lessons, students are gaining real-world insights into how businesses and governments operate, while developing critical thinking skills that will prepare them for future economic studies.

Grade 10: Understanding of Macroeco Objectives

and Exploring

In Grade 10 Economics, students have successfully completed their studies in microeconomics and are now stepping into the dynamic world of macroeconomics. To make these complex concepts engaging and meaningful, we emphasise innovative and interactive teaching methods that bring macroeconomic goals to life.

The concept of economic growth was illustrated using the rapid rise of the electric car industry. Students explored how the increasing popularity of electric vehicles has fuelled growth in related sectors, such as battery manufacturing, autonomous driving technology, and charging infrastructure. These interconnected industries have created a ripple effect, driving significant expansion across the broader economy and showcasing the real-world impact of economic growth.

In our lessons on full employment, students engaged in thought-provoking discussions about employment challenges and opportunities in various sectors, including agriculture, traditional manufacturing, and the rapidly growing webcasting industry. They examined the risks of unemployment during economic downturns and shared personal strategies for coping with such challenges. These discussions helped students understand the vital role full employment plays in maintaining social stability and fostering individual self-worth. Through these explorations, students not only gained a deeper understanding of macroeconomic goals but also developed valuable insights into the workforce and career planning, equipping them with knowledge that extends far beyond the classroom.

Grade 11: In-depth Study and Test Preparation Strategies from Micro to Macro

In the Grade 11 A-Level AS Economics course, students have completed their study of microeconomics, gaining a solid understanding of core concepts such as supply and demand, market equilibrium, price elasticity, and market failure. They have thoroughly analysed consumer and producer behaviour in the market and explored how government interventions impact market efficiency. Through case studies and class discussions, students have developed both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into microeconomics.

Currently, students are diving into macroeconomics, which focuses on topics like economic growth, unemployment, inflation, international trade, and how governments use fiscal and monetary policies to achieve stability and sustainable development. The study of macroeconomics offers students broader perspectives on economic systems and the dynamics of the global economy. They also examine real-world issues, such as combating economic recessions, controlling inflation, and fostering job creation, which nurtures their ability to apply theory to practical scenarios.

Essay writing remains one of the most challenging aspects of the exam, as it tests students’ analytical and critical thinking skills comprehensively. To address this, significant time and effort have been devoted to essay practice. Key areas of focus include structuring answers clearly, analysing data effectively, applying economic theories to support arguments, and managing time efficiently during exams. Students are improving steadily through repeated practice, enhancing both their logical reasoning and written communication skills.

To prepare for the official A-Level exams in May 2025, we have implemented a comprehensive revision plan. This includes regular reviews of key topics, targeted exercises, mock exams, and guidance on time management and exam strategies. These preparations aim to strengthen students’ knowledge base, refine their exam techniques, and ensure they achieve excellent results. Additionally, this process lays a strong foundation for their future studies in the A2 course and beyond.

Grade 12: Balance Academics and Applications

In the Year 12 A-Level A2 Economics course, we have mostly completed our studies of microeconomics and are now preparing to transition into macroeconomics. The microeconomics segment covered essential concepts such as the principles of demand and supply, market equilibrium, consumer behaviour, and production costs. These topics help students understand how markets operate and how individual economic behaviours affect the overall economy. Throughout the learning process, students have shown high levels of engagement and enthusiasm in discussions, which has provided a solid foundation for grasping complex economic theories.

However, during this busy university application season, students face the dual pressure of keeping up with new material while preparing various application materials. Balancing academic responsibilities and application tasks has become a significant challenge. The essay writing component, in particular, has consistently posed difficulties in Economics exams, with many students feeling confused about argumentation and analysis. To better support students in overcoming this challenge, we plan to dedicate more time and effort to focused practice on essay writing, enhancing their analytical skills and argumentation techniques.

We will implement various strategies, including mock exams, after-school tutoring, and group discussions, to help students gain a deeper understanding of economic principles and improve their writing skills. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every student meets the academic requirements of their desired universities, enabling them to transition smoothly into higher-level studies. Through persistent effort and comprehensive support, we believe that students can achieve excellent results in the upcoming exams, laying a solid foundation for their future learning.
