Grade 6

Pencil Shading and Gradient Project

At Fettes College Guangzhou, the G6 Art & Design students are deeply engaged in a pencil shading and gradient project. This assignment challenges them to explore the nuances of light and shadow, using only the simple yet versatile medium of pencil. Each student meticulously works on their piece, carefully applying varying degrees of pressure to create smooth gradients that transition seamlessly from light to dark. The classroom is filled with the soft scratching of pencils on paper as the students experiment with different techniques to achieve the desired effects.

Some students focus on realistic depictions of objects, while others venture into more abstract compositions. Through this project, they not only develop their technical skills but also gain a deeper understanding of how light interacts with form. The atmosphere is one of concentration and creativity, as they strive to bring their visions to life, each pencil stroke bringing them closer to mastering the art of shading and gradient.

Exploration of the Cultural Image of "Snakes"

This engraving project introduced Grade 7 students to the cultural significance of the snake in the Chinese Zodiac. Snakes symbolised wisdom, transformation, and mystery in many traditions. Students explored these meanings while learning engraving techniques. Using black engraving boards and specialised tools, they carved detailed snake designs, practising precision and control. The project encouraged creativity as each student interpreted the snake’s elegance in their own way. Safety was a key focus, ensuring students handled the tools responsibly while expressing their artistic vision.

Through this hands-on activity, students connected traditional symbolism with modern craftsmanship. They developed patience, attention to detail, and an appreciation for cultural art forms. As they worked, they discussed how the snake was represented in different cultures, deepening their understanding. The final engravings showcased their unique styles and skills. This project not only built artistic ability but also fostered respect for heritage and creative problem-solving. Students left with a deeper appreciation for both art and the rich symbolism of the Year of the Snake.
